In the Australian state of New South Wales with its metropolis of Sydney, the CoV figures continue to rise despite a lockdown that has lasted for almost seven weeks. Within 24 hours, 390 new infections had been recorded, the highest number since the pandemic began, health authorities said today. Two people had died in connection with Covid-19, regional government chief Gladys Berejiklian said.
The metropolis of Sydney and large parts of New South Wales have already been in lockdown since the end of June. People are now only allowed to leave their homes in exceptional circumstances. The measures are to apply until at least the end of August. Restrictions on the population are also currently in place in Melbourne and the capital Canberra. However, no other part of the country has been as badly affected as New South Wales.
Australia, with its 25 million inhabitants, was very successful in the fight against the pandemic for a long time because of extremely strict rules. However, due to the spread of the delta variant, cases are now increasing.
In total, about 37,000 cases have been confirmed since the beginning of the pandemic. More than 940 people have died in connection with the virus. The country’s borders have already been closed since March 2020.
